Developing a northern river, having learnt from the past

Irrigation and Water Resources, summer, 26-27,
A research project was conducted to investigate the rivers's flow and ecology to determine the possible impacts of changes to river flow. Using computer modelling it was found that for many river species, continuity of flow is important, as is timing of the annual wet season floods. However it appears that extracting water for agriculture from aquifers at a distance of several kilometres from the river should not seriously affect the groundwater flow into the river and it should be possible to ensure a predictable water supply for irrigators.
